The shock absorber is mainly an oil pump. The end of the piston rod is connected to a piston, which works through the hydraulic oil in the pressure pipe. When the suspension moves up and down, hydraulic oil is forced into the microholes (also called orifices) in the piston. However, the orifice allows only a small amount of oil to enter the piston. This will undoubtedly slow down the movement of the piston, which in turn slows down the movement of the spring and suspension.
Traditional modern shock absorbers are speed-sensitive hydraulic damping devices, which means that the faster the suspension moves, the more resistance the shock absorber will provide. Due to this feature, the shock absorber can be adjusted according to road conditions.
